Researchers at PU have criticised this action, arguing that in order to preserve the objectivity of their work, research monies should only be used for academic endeavours.
A national newspaper reports that the funding was previously allowed by PU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Khalid Mahmood from the university's budget line item titled "Lumpsum Provision for Research-Improvement of Education" and presented as an agenda item for formal approval at the PU Syndicate meeting on April 29.
- Even though some Syndicate members, most notably Drs. Asghar Iqbal and Muhammad Islam, were against it, the re-appropriation was approved during the meeting. There was disagreement from Dr. Islam.
- The decision to shift the money has drawn criticism because they were intended for research, and staff employees were already having trouble paying for travel grants and other fees associated with research because of stagnating research funding and growing inflation.
Additionally, data indicates that the university’s research budget is largely underutilised because Pay for Buses of the institution’s lengthy procedures, which discourages a culture of research.
