According to reports, a driver who ploughed into passengers in Brownsville who were waiting at a bus stop has killed at least eight people, according to NBC News.
A senior law enforcement officer believes that the 10 injured in the Brownsville automobile accident were migrants who were reportedly waiting at a stop close to the Ozanam Centre, a Catholic Charities facility.
Around 8:30 a.m., seven fatalities were reported immediately following the Texas vehicle accident. On Sunday night, Brownsville Mayor Trey Mendez posted on Facebook that one more person had passed away and numerous more were still in serious condition.
According to the top law enforcement officer, at first, many thought it was deliberate. Later, the official clarified that it is unclear whether it was deliberate and that the motivation is still under investigation.
Police were also investigating into whether the motorist was inebriated or whether the collision was an accident, according to Brownsville Lt. Martin Sandoval in an interview.
The motorist, a male Hispanic, hasn’t been helping the police, according to Sandoval.
He has given us many names, according to Sandoval, and officials are awaiting a fingerprint match that they think will positively identify the motorist, who is accused of reckless driving.
There may be further costs. According to Sandoval, the FBI is helping the Brownsville police with their probe.
US Attorney General Merrick Garland, according to the Department of Justice, was informed on the event.
On its official Facebook page, the Brownsville Fire Department earlier on Sunday stated that eleven persons were hurt in the collision and were transferred to nearby hospitals.
The agency added that one injured individual was sent to the neighbouring Harlingen Valley Baptist Medical Centre.
One migrant from Brownsville told KVEO, “I was almost struck.”
Us as we were waiting there as the truck drove through the red signal, but they did strike the people around.
Before the Thursday deadline for the Title 42 immigration programme, Brownsville is one of the border communities experiencing an increase in the number of migrants travelling to the US from Mexico.
It’s still unclear what transpired, according to Mayor Mendez.
We are still learning more about the unfortunate incident that happened today, and Mendez stated that there is still no proof that it was a deliberate act.
The Ozanam Centre lodges some migrants overnight, according to Sister Norma Pimentel, executive director of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley. She also noted that the centre has not recently received any direct threats in relation to the border situation.
