PPP has a significant lead in Karachi after winning the LG by-election
According to Bilawal, PPP’s triumph is a “historical achievement.”
PPP gains 98 seats in Karachi, strengthening its stronghold.
JI is in second place with 89 seats, followed by PTI in third place with 42 seats.
KARACHI: The Pakistan People Party (PPP) claimed a significant victory after winning the majority of seats in the local government by-elections and advancing towards the mayoral position of the city.
After the revelation of the unofficial and unverified results of the by-polls held a day earlier, the party has won seats in 98 of the union council constituencies in the port city, boosting its overall position.
Out of the total 246 seats in the city, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has so far released the results for 240 seats. Six seats still up for election, including five from the district west and one from the district east, have had their results delayed by the electoral commission.
With 89 and 42 seats in the provincial capital, respectively, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) is in second place, while Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is third.
In the local body elections in Sindh, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) won seven seats, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) won two, and the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan and an independent candidate each won one seat.
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari expressed satisfaction for his party’s victory in the by-elections and referred to it as a “historical achievement” when the results were announced.
The party published Bilawal’s remark following the victory on Twitter.
“People have restored their confidence in the PPP from Karachi to Kashmore. The fact that all of the district chairs, including those in Karachi and Hyderabad, would be jiyalas (PPP sympathisers), according to the PPP chairman, is a historical accomplishment.
He continued by saying that the victory was due to the support of the public, the sacrifices made by the parties’ slain leaders and employees, as well as their hard work.
