The 2005 psychological action thriller movie Anniyan, sometimes known as “Stranger,” was written and directed by S. Shankar and produced by V. Ravichandran of Aascar Films. The story revolves around a disillusioned common guy whose dual personality strives to change the system out of frustration at what he perceives as growing social apathy and public negligence. As Ambi, played by Vikram, a law-abiding, idealistic attorney who suffers from dissociative identity disorder (also known as multiple personality disorder), Ambi takes on the personas of a deadly vigilante named Anniyan and a suave fashion model named Remo. Sadha portrays the main female character. In the movie, actors Vivek, Nedumudi Venu, Nassar, and Prakash Raj also appeared.
While working on his previous movie, Boys, in post-production in the middle of 2003, Shankar had the idea for this one. He based the movie on his own experiences growing up, when he was troubled by what he observed around him and eventually became dissatisfied with society. Principal photography for Anniyan began in March 2004 after pre-production started in November 2003. The film took 14 months to make, with significant production setbacks. The music sequences were filmed in Mumbai, Malaysia, Amsterdam, and Tenkasi, while the movie was filmed in Hyderabad, Thanjavur, Tindivanam, and Chennai. Its depiction of the Tyagaraja Aradhana music festival and significant use of time-slice photography in an action scene made the movie stand out.
Up until Ravi Varman took over as the project’s new cinematographer, V. Manikandan abandoned it midway through. V. T. Vijayan was in charge of editing, Sabu Cyril was in charge of production design, Peter Hein was in charge of stunt choreography, and Harris Jayaraj, who was working with the filmmaker for the first time, was in charge of the soundtrack. The movie, which had a budget of 263.8 million rupees and was hailed as the director’s magnum opus, was at the time of its release the most costly South Indian movie ever filmed. With the assistance of his buddy SI Chari, Ambi finally works up the nerve to ask Nandini to marry him during the annual Thyagaraja Aradhana, but she rejects him because she cannot stand his domineering demeanor or continual whining and nitpicking. Ambi, who is distressed, makes an attempt at suicide and nearly drowns before changing his mind. Later, Ambi creates Remo, a metrosexual fashion model, as a new personality. Nandini develops a crush on Remo and eventually falls in love with him, not realizing that he is one of Ambi’s multiple identities. Nandini devalues the property when she buys a piece of land for her dowry in order to avoid paying stamp duty. She is accompanied by Ambi, who declines to assist her after learning of her plan to break the law.
Remo assumes the appearance of Anniyan as Remo and Nandini are out on a date, and he makes an effort to punish Nandini for her dishonest deed. Nandini calls out for Ambi as Anniyan is about to kill her, and Anniyan changes back into Ambi, who collapses and goes unconscious. Ambi receives a multiple personality disorder diagnosis at NIMHANS after Nandini takes him there. Vijaykumar, the head psychiatrist at NIMHANS, discovers Ambi’s past through recovered-memory treatment. When Ambi was ten years old, he saw his younger sister Vidya die accidentally as a result of apathy in the community. His high standards were a result of the experience, which left him with a significant emotional scar. The psychiatrist realizes that although Anniyan and Remo are aware of Ambi as a distinct individual, Ambi is unaware of their presence inside of him. According to Vijaykumar, Remo would vanish if Nandini expresses her affections for Ambi, while Anniyan won’t go until society undergoes change. Ambi’s love is accepted by Nandini, and Remo leaves.

Because one of Anniyan’s victims, Chockalingam, a dishonest catering contractor with the Indian Railways, was his older brother, Prabhakar is determined to personally punish Anniyan. When Anniyan stands in front of the public and the media at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, he confesses to the killings in a theatrical PR stunt. Anniyan discusses the motives for the killings and claims that the country will only prosper on par with developed nations when every Indian is accountable and truthful. His approaches are praised and criticized. Prabhakar tries to apprehend Anniyan, but he manages to get away. Prabhakar learns that the connection belongs to Ambi after looking into Anniyan’s internet activity’s phone records and IP address.
The identity of Ambi is uncovered after surveillance footage from Anniyan’s public appearance is carefully examined. In order to force Ambi to confess to his misdeeds, Prabhakar arrests him and administers a polygraph test to him. The police believe him to be innocent since they can tell he is talking the truth and has no intention of killing anyone. When Prabhakar becomes agitated, he tells Chari and all the officers to leave before severely torturing and abusing Ambi by herself using penalties from the Garuda Puranam. Prabhakar eventually throws Ambi into a boiling saltwater tank. When a traumatized Ambi cries out for help, Prabhakar mockingly exploits the water cooler to make the water so cold that it turns to ice, nearly killing Ambi. Anniyan returns as a result of the anguish and near-death experience. Ambi’s personalities switch between him and Anniyan; as Anniyan, he mercilessly subdues Prabhakar while acting like himself and pleading for pity.
Vijaykumar testifies on Ambi’s mental state during his trial for a number of killings. Additionally, Chari covertly recorded Ambi being interrogated and tortured by Prabhakar and used it as proof of Ambi’s mental state. Ambi is found not guilty, but is ordered to have psychotherapy in a mental facility and will be allowed to leave once recovered. Ambi appears to have relaxed his strict commitment to protocol when he is finally let go two years later. He marries Nandini, and on their honeymoon, Ambi witnesses a man drinking among other passengers on a train. This man is an electrician who was indirectly to blame for his sister’s passing years earlier. He moves himself and Nandini away from the man before surreptitiously changing into Anniyan and kills the man by throwing him off the train. Instead of eliminating his other ego, Ambi hides the experience from Nandini, revealing that the two personalities have fused into one identity.
